The main risks of losing money from a payment card lie in the insufficient awareness of citizens about security rules

The primary risks of losing money from a bank card are due to a lack of awareness or the gullibility of citizens, such as handling emails and messages from so-called “charities” that promise financial assistance but require personal card details to receive it.

This was reported by Anna Dovhalska, Deputy Chairperson of the Board of GLOBUS BANK.

In addition to such fake SMS and email distributions, according to the banker, fraudsters, having criminally obtained citizens' access codes to mobile operator applications, can create duplicate SIM cards (both physical and electronic; however, it is almost impossible to duplicate SIM cards for contract numbers).

As the expert emphasized, citizens should also pay special attention to phone fraud—very professional NLP-level persuasion to provide necessary card details allegedly from financial institution employees. It is also advisable to be cautious when paying with a card on dubious internet platforms or disclosing personal information to participate in some "profitable," "win-win" lottery or competition.

“Obviously, the larger the number of active internet users, the more frequent fraud cases occur specifically online. Not all new internet users, especially middle-aged and elderly citizens, can recognize fraudsters, resist induced positive emotions (e.g., an offer to buy an expensive item for almost nothing), or conversely, the fear of losing money manipulated by fraudsters (e.g., manipulative intimidation that money will ‘disappear’ from the card). Therefore, comprehensive explanatory work by financial institutions remains crucial, increasing citizens’ awareness of fraud schemes, preventing any attempts by fraudsters to take personal funds, and even embedding caution at the instinctive level,” emphasized Anna Dovhalska.
